As I was cruising through the twitter feeds last night, I saw this lovely gem. This short article, written by Rebecca “Burt” Rey of Jezebel, informs us all that Mitt Romney is a “sizeist”. A sizeist is, in very basic terms, someone who looks down on fat people. For Romney, I would assume that by “fat” he means anyone who is over his 190 pounds. He was described to be a “healthy appearing, energetic, strong, physically fit male” by his doctor during his campaign, and I guess that’s a standard that he is expecting everyone else to live up to.
Think I’m being a little hasty in assuming that? Maybe not. Romney reportedly made comments about Chris Christie (one of the top candidates for Republican VP in the 2008 presidential election) and his weight. Authors of the new book “Double Down”, an account of the 2008 presidential election, said:
“Romney marveled at Christie’s girth, his difficulties in making his way down the narrow aisle of the campaign bus…Watching a video of Christie without his suit jacket on, Romney cackled to his aides, ‘Guys! Look at that!’”
This isn’t the worst of it. When choosing his running mate, Romney’s campaign team created a code, based on the name “Project Goldfish”, so hackers couldn’t figure out the top choices for VP candidacy. The VP candidates’ code names were Lakefish (Pawlenty), Filet o’ Fish (Portman), Pescado (Rubio), and Fishconsin (Ryan). Christie’s code name was Pufferfish. Really guys? Nice schoolyard humor.
This next one is great, too. Apparently, Mitt cared about fitness sooooo much that he would make fun of people that he assumed didn’t care about fitness. He would say things like,“Oh, there’s your date for tonight,” to male members of his crew when he saw a bigger woman on the street.
WHAT?! Okay, this would (unfortunately) make sense if Romney was a 16 year old boy in high school still, because 16 year old boys say really mean, shitty things (as do 16 year old girls). But Romney is 66 years old, with a wife and children. What the hell is this shit, coming from someone who was up for election for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? The fact that we have big name political leaders who are still judging women (and men!) based on their body weight is a reason that we need feminism. Why is physical image something that is so important to anyone, much less someone who was ready to take on humongous problems that have lasting, global effects? Romney, what are you teaching all five of your sons with your childish, rude behavior? That it’s okay to judge someone based on their freakin’ BMI? What a great role model you are. Shame on you.
This definitely isn’t the first time that Romney has said or done something unbelievably stupid. Anyone else glad that he didn’t win the 2008 election? Yeah, me too.
