Who the h*ell is Pete Davidson anyway?
Seriously though?
Actor? In what…
Comedian? Not a very good one…
I know him better as Ariana Grande and Kim Kardashian’s ex. You girls dodged a bullet!
In Variety’s “Ask a Local” interview, Pete Davidson went on a rant about how “people do really crazy shit on the internet.” Mainly targeting girls who make “get ready with me” videos, aka influencers. “Who the f*ck are you?” he asks, before claiming they do “nothing” and acting stunned that anyone could make “40 million a year” doing it. He wraps up by wondering if anyone else sees “how f*cking insane and lame this is.”
Pete, do you have anything else to include or are you finished?
Let’s get this straight, clearly these women are doing SOMETHING to make millions of dollars a year. Why are you getting mad at them for making the money? Props to them! If this upsets you so much, why aren’t you mad at the billion dollar corporations who are paying them? Instead of getting mad at the women for receiving it?
We’ve all seen people poking fun at the “try being an influencer for a day” meme, and if you haven’t, check it out below. In the original (now deleted) video, a MUA influencer complains about her day full of meetings and says being an influencer is hard. Viewers were quick to troll her in the comments, with nurses, doctors, bankers, and others comparing their own grueling hours to hers. And sure, influencing might not be physically laborious, and it doesn’t require a specific degree or certification. But that doesn’t make it “nothing”. Getting into influencing may be easier than some career paths, but staying in it is another story. It takes skill and dedication to build your own brand, keep an audience engaged, and turn that attention into an income.
To close out his rant, Davidson shares, “the world is broken” Ok Pete, you’re right about one thing, but you are a part of the problem! Why do people (men specifically) think it’s ok to talk down on women when they are successful. I have not heard any discourse against male youtubers or streamers making millions a year for their similar type of content. It is common to drag on women influencers for the amount of money and success they achieve, but the same success is praised when it belongs to a man. So yes Pete, the double standard is what is broken in this world.
At the end of the day, this isn’t really about Pete Davidson. It’s about a pattern. Women are often ignored for promotions, not taken seriously in the workplace, and still earn just 81 cents for every dollar a man makes, according to the National Women’s Law Center. So when women find a way to earn on their own terms, why are they the ones getting laughed at?
Influencing is dismissed as “nothing” for one simple reason: it’s a field dominated by women, and the content is stereotypically girly. Makeup tutorials, outfit videos, and “get ready with me” videos are treated as frivolous, even though they take real skill: creativity, editing, branding, negotiating deals, and building an audience from scratch. Women who turn all of that into a paycheck aren’t “doing nothing.” They’re doing exactly what we’ve always been told to do, work hard, earn what you deserve.
So, Pete, the next time you feel the urge to roll your eyes at a girl filming her morning routine, day in the life, or fit checks, ask yourself why her success bothers you more than the billion-dollar companies cutting her checks. Until then, keep scrolling.
Thank you, next!
