Ok I try to keep it lighthearted in my blogs but today it might get heavy and since no one is talking about it enough, I will…Violence against Asian Amerians. This isn’t a new issue but it has gotten out of control recently since the pandemic and it needs to end now.
I am not from any Asian decent but I still stand in solidarity with the extreme increase in violence against my Asian sister, brothers, and non-binary comrades. If you aren’t aware there has been a huge spike in attacks against Asian Americans, mostly the elderly. It’s safe to say this stems from the fact the old “president” kept calling the Coronavirus the “Chinese Virus”, which we’ll get back to.
First I want to point out how racist some people are and how people are still blaming ALL Asians for the virus like they created it (which obviously they didn’t). But have you heard about the new strand that scientists are saying might have come from Britain or South African. You don’t see people taking their fear and anger out on British Americans or South Africans, because it isn’t their fault. In reality we really don’t know who is responsible for this virus, hence no one should be targeted or attacked because of it.
Like I previously stated this is clearly a race issue and the past president did nothing but add fuel to fire by calling it the “Chinese Virus”. Asian American have had times in history where they were seen as second class citizens. For example, during a major way of Asian immigration in the late 19th century laws were created to prevent any Asian immigration (Immigration Act of 1924, Asistic Barred Zone Act of 1917).

Today the Coronavirus is the newest reason for senseless attacks on Asian American and there hasn’t been enough media coverage on this, which I’m not even remotely surprised by. I understand America is already going through a racial justice movement since this summer with the Black Lives Matter Movement but we also need to spread awareness on protecting Asian Americans too. Racism is a virus that affects everyone and every race we can’t/shouldn’t just focus on one at a time we all need to stand together to end all racism.

Thank you for addressing the racism that has followed this virus, its crazy that not only was there racism against asians but this was around the same time of the black lives matter movement! It is so clear that racism is prevalent in society and was still being encouraged and normalized by our old president. I really liked that you address that even though you are not of Asian decent, you needed to speak about this issue. Allies are just as important if not more so.
