This week has taken a toll on me, and it’s probably taken a toll on you too. With everything going on in the world it’s hard to have an uplifted spirit. I had a few ideas for my post this week where I’d write angrily and rant about things we’ve seen on the news recently. Then I decided that I’d rather share some good news happening in the world. Because even though we shouldn’t ignore all the troubles happening domestically and globally, we should recognize the good that is going on and realize that the world isn’t filled to capacity with evil. So without further ado, I give you: news that hopefully makes you happy!
- You may have heard back in May that Ireland signed a referendum to legalize same-sex marriage! YAY! But even better news, it is now in
action. The first gay marriage in Ireland happened Tuesday! Richard Dowling and Cormac Gollogly were together for twelve years and were finally able to tie the knot in 2015.
- Here in Virginia, all homeless Veterans have been housed and there is still room for more Veterans who may need homes in the future. We are the first state that has been able to accomplish this difficult feat! There are many other states that are also making great strides to end Veteran homelessness. USA! USA! USA!
- Great news: Bernie Sanders is on Snapchat! Let’s see who gets the best screenshot of his hair wildin’ out. Add him and see him speak at rallies and even talk to you: @bernie.sanders Bernie is the most recent presidential candidate to make a Snapchat, but click here to see the list of all other presidential candidates who have the app!
- If you follow our Facebook page, you should have seen this huge news: Nigeria has banned female genital mutilation!! Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a very serious issue in many parts of the world. While people are still trying their best to produce change in the countries where this is a prominent issue, hopefully one country completely banning FGM/C will set a precedent for their neighbors.
These are just a handful of good stories you can find online. However, it can be difficult to find good news surfing popular online media outlets. We are surrounded by tragic, sad news all the time, but I encourage you to go the extra mile to find some good news that’s happening. I want to emphasize again that we do need to be having discussions of the terror that keeps occurring internationally and within our own borders, but being surrounded by such terrible news so often is not healthy. Peace & love to all of you.
