“GOVERNOR GLENN YOUNGKIN & HIS “POLITICALLY MOTIVATED” PLAN TO REMOVE ALL MENTIONS OF DR.MARTIN LUTHER KING JR, IN THE ELEMENTARY HISTORY CURRICULUM”
The drafted plan was originally introduced in August 2022 and placed an emphasis on valuing Virginia’s history and fixing the curriculum to adhere to the “new” standards. The year 2015 was the last time the guidelines were updated and yet the drafted curriculum plan left out any mentions of Martin Luther King Jr and the majority of Black History for that matter. Not only does the draft fail to mention Martin Luther King jr and the start of the Civil Rights Movement but it also denies to tell the true history of America, as it still glorifies Columbus and his so-called “day” instead of recognizing indigenous people and how they are the ones who truly discovered America. This is an attempt to remove an important part of US history from education and from young children from learning the truth of our country.

GLOBAL NEWS:
“HOW IRAN UNDERESTIMATED THE OUTRAGE OVER THE KILLING OF MAHSA AMINI”
In September 2022 Mahsa Amini was wrongfully killed after being arrested for violating the strict Islamic dress code for women. In the country of Iran, women are held to unbelievably strict laws concerning the way they dress & morality (ie they have to wear headscarves & hijabs). In an article about the current situation it states, “On November 24, 2022, U.N. Human Rights Council held a special session to address the deteriorating human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The special follows an official request submitted on November 11, 2022, by Germany and Iceland, which has been supported by at least 44 States, and among them, the required quorum of one-third of the 47 members of the Council” (Ochab, Nov 24, 2022).
The main motivation behind the protests is “they have been calling for accountability for Mahsa Amini’s death, an end to violence and discrimination against women in Iran, and an end to their compulsory veiling” (Ochab, Nov 24, 2022).
While protests are meant to be peaceful, they are met with harmful means such as physical violence, teargas, & firearms with metal pellets and the protests have continued to escalate through the month of November. Some of the newer concerns of violence are increased sexual assaults against women and girls; “BBC reported on a video that is to show anti-riot forces in Iran sexually assaulting a female protester whilst trying to arrest her” (Ochab, Nov 24, 2022).
