A lot has happened since last week’s newsroom….

• Planned Parenthood Appointed a New President

Dr. Leana Wen has officially been named as Planned Parenthood’s new President. Why is this important? Well Dr. Wen is not only an actual licensed medical physician, but she is also a first generation immigrant whose family relied on Planned Parenthood themselves when she was a child. Having that perspective herself means that she has that extra push to make sure that Planned Parenthood will fight to make sure their patients receives the proper health care they deserve. And she’s already proved that she will. She sued the Trump Administration as the Commissioner of Health for the City of Baltimore when crucial funding was taken away from the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, and won. Props to her and to the future of Planned Parenthood.

During the intense race for the GOP to get their Supreme Court candidate, Brett Kavanaugh, appointed to the empty seat, an even darker story has emerged. A week an a half ago, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford came forward with her account of being sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh at a high school party. Since Dr. Ford’s initial statement, two more women have come forward, Deborah Ramirez and an anonymous source. Since these women have come forward, amidst all the support for them are also multiple casts of doubt on whether the incidents even happen due to the length of time it took them to come forward. The issue I have found is that instead of asking why they waiting so long to tell their story, we should be asking what were the obstacles in these women’s way that kept them from coming forward. Often times the case is that it doesn’t matter if it’s two weeks or twenty years, women aren’t believed, period.

• Should We Be Concerned About Drake?

The answer to this question is a hard YES. Drake has recently been romantically linked with 18-year-old model, Bella Harris, when he shut down an entire restaurant for a date. When this story started trending, it led to the discovery of the two being linked for the first time at Harris’s ripe old age of 16. Then THIS happened. While Millie Bobby Brown, 14, claims the relationship is completely normal, it begs the question…where do we draw the line between mentor/mentee relationships and potential grooming relationships?? I think its when a 31-year-old rapper starts giving a 14-year-old actress boy advice and is telling her how much he misses her…but that’s just me.

• The Green Card Crisis

This past weekend a new immigration policy was released under the radar of the Kavanaugh drama. At its core, it will force families to choose between government aid and potential citizenship. While the likelihood of organizations even letting this be carried out is still unknown, it begs the question- why are we arguing why these policies are unconstitutional? @socialjusticesolidarity brought up the crucial fact that instead of arguing why these policies aren’t not unconstitutional, our leaders should be creating policies that actually fit in with the constitution in the first place.

• Robyn Rihanna Fenty Just Did THAT

So Savage x Fenty just presented their second season lingerie line at New York Fashion Week, and it. was. EVERYTHING. Not only did she cast models of every race, shape, and size, but she also had not one, but TWO very pregnant women wearing her creations on stage. One of the women, Slick Woods, was literally in LABOR while strutting her stuff.  On top of that, Rihanna has distanced her line from the typical construct of “sexy,” having her models wearing lingerie of all styles ranging from modest boxers to a strappy harness and pasties set. Hopefully this show will signal a new era of fashion, one moving away from the homogeneity of eurocentric features and male-gaze focused runways.
