Money or Life?

Martin Shkreli may be the most hated man in America right now, and rightfully so. A quick summary of what he did to catch you up: he bought the rights to Daraprim, a medicine used to treat cancer and AIDS patients, and he raised the price per pill from $13.50/ pill to $750/pill. This is over 5,500% increase in the price of this pill all overnight without any warning! In the post, I’m going to discuss everything that is extremely disgusting about what he has done.

Martin Shkreli killed every good vibe I was feeling when I first read articles about this disgusting occurrence of events. I highly suggest reading this story to give you a point of reference for what I’m going to be talking about.

It is absolutely outrageous that he would do all of this and still act like he didn’t do anything wrong. He talked about how $750/ pill is still “underpriced” when he increased it by over 5,500%, which I think is absolutely insane! Any kind of medicine or medical procedures are generally highly priced as it is, so to raise the price of a drug that has been around this long without any warning is going to destroy so many people’s lives.

This pill is a medicine that people take to stay alive. People living with AIDs have a compromised immune system, which means catching something as simple as the common cold for them could easily be life-threatening. Without this medicine at an affordable price, people will die.

Shkreli gave his side of the argument to the people that the reason he is charging so much is to do more research and to make a better medicine, but in my opinion that’s complete bullshit. This pill has been around for 62 years, That’s almost twice as long as Shkreli has been alive, not to mention that this treatment to help save and extend the lives of aids and cancer patients is extremely effective according to medical professionals.

Shkreli has been sent a lot of hate, especially through social media. Even people like Hillary Clinton were seen tweeting at this disgusting event.

I think it is awesome that so many people are banding together to fight what Shkreli has said. For a few days he was trying to fight all of the push back he was getting from the community, but that did not last very long. You can see some of his original responses to this controversial topic here.

In recent news, he has talked about lowering the price down, but he has not said by how much or when he will. I just hope that it is soon, or else people will start to lose their lives because of this.

I have discussed this a lot in the past few days just because it infuriates me so much, but my one friend made an extremely interesting comment to me. We were talking about how fucked up all this was, but he said “Honestly, I think Shkreli is above all the criticism. He will be making so much money since he has cornered everyone in this market that he will make so much money and not have to worry about what anyone thinks.”

At first I was so upset that my friend would suggest this, but then I thought about it some more and was shocked that he might actually be right. Shkreli’s greed might be so great that he just couldn’t care less about anyone in the world, and with as terrible as that is, that could be the nature of him. All in all, he is a greedy, rich man that is so caught up in money that he doesn’t even care about the number of people and families that will suffer because of him. I sincerely hope something changes soon so that people don’t have to suffer any more than they already are because of this change.
