Quick Hit: Transgender Students are Safe from Discrimination by Title IX

Yesterday the Department of Education released a statement that under Title IX, which requires that schools should treat students equally no matter their gender identity- includes those that identify as  transgender.

This is a huge step for individuals afraid to express their gender while at school with the threat of backlash. This can be in the form of not participating in full privileges as other students (field trips, for example), using their preferred bathroom, and feeling safe knowing that the school will back them up if they experience bullying. This being counted as a safety measure through legal action allows for individuals to have peace of mind knowing that a law can protect them.

Although a law has been strictly interpreted to protect the rights of transgender students, it is by far not enough for the attitudes that these individuals face each and every day. This is a step in the right direction, but when transgender is included in all States laws, that will be the only time transgender individuals will be allowed full rights as people.

  1. I am glad to see that transgendered people of all ages are being included in protections that any others take for granted.
I have tried to be part of the solution and look forward to safer days expressing my feminine side and nature
