Mermaids and Whales: Which should we choose??

Would you rather be a whale or a mermaid? When searching through my Facebook newsfeed I saw a post of a naked woman that asked that question. I never thought this question would have been used to try and “motivate” women to work out, but sure enough, a gym posted this sign that had a picture of a beautiful woman on it and asked “This Summer, Would you rather be a mermaid or a whale?” If we are getting technical, I would rather be a human but take a look at what this one woman had to say in response…
mermaid or whale

Hopefully the link works for everyone, you may have to have a Facebook to see it, but in a nutshell this is what was said in response to the flyer…
“Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness. They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lot of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places…They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on CDs. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defends and admires.
Mermaids do not exist.
But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish? They would have no sex life and could not bear children. Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad. And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side?
Without a doubt, I’d rather be a whale.”
She then goes on to say that she would rather eat and have ice cream with her family. Amen! She also says that “we women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn’t enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies. We are not fat, we are cultivated…” Wait. This is beautiful. I have never thought of weight as accumulating wisdom that spreads to the body and while it is a bit of a stretch it is a great way to look at the “fat” on our bodies. Most of us women that think of ourselves as fat or overweight and hate our bodies should develop a new perspective. It is sad that our society tells us what the appropriate body type must be in order to be beautiful and most women can’t even fit that type (me included). Mermaids are not even real and we are comparing our real human women to them! That is wrong in my mind.
mermaid vs whale
Why would we want to have no genitalia, smell like a fish, and never have children? All for a small waist?!? Also, why is a whale being compared? Is that the only other creature in the sea? What about a dolphin or a shark?! There are so many other body types out there and society should learn to accept them and appreciate them! As a woman, I have struggled with the concept of weight my whole life and I’m sure men have too in some ways. It is ridiculous to me that in order to feel liked or “hot” in front of other people, I have to look like a mermaid. UM NO! This needs to stop now and I am so glad this woman wrote a response to the article and posted the picture that she did. That took guts. Some of the comments were not nice but she still did it! That is why I decided to share it with you!
Thoughts? Would you rather be a mermaid or a whale??

This is great! I used to work at Gold’s Gym and they had a poster up that said that, which obviously they target people to be fit and loose weight to keep their business open. I love the reply that lady left. She is genius in her comparison and applaud her for her courageousness and outlook on life.

Thank you so much for the comment Steelba! That is sad you have seen this at your gym. Hopefully with enough backlash against it gyms will stop using this type of flyer! I was definitely glad this woman did what she did to respond to it!

What an awesome post. I am glad you have brought this up as Spring Break has past and Summer is almost here, so many people are worried about shedding weight. But the comment you shared was beautiful from the anonymous Facebook user. Whales have an awesome life and the idea that being a mermaid is better in order to have a tiny waist is ridiculous. Although I have never struggled with my weight personally, I know a lot of women have. This goes to show that women should be comfortable with their bodies. And like you said besides mermaids and whales there are sharks and other sea creatures, which in turn symbolizes how there are many different body types and that is perfectly okay. Thanks for writing about this.

I appreciate the great comment SarahStar77! I definitely agree than many women struggle with the weight issue and they should not have to worry about which sea creature they want to look like, especially if there are only two options! I felt that people should really protest this type of flyer. There are way better methods of motivation that gyms could use!
