THE UNheard stories of all the girls who Weren’t Gabby petito

Sasha Neasheed Karriem-Conner was last seen leaving her residence to look for a job in Atlanta, Georgia on July 17, 2000.  She never returned home and was never seen from again.  Authorities believed her boyfriend Michael Davis was involved, and he was later convicted of trafficking.  Sasha still remains missing.

Latrice Armstead was last seen in Memphis, Tennessee at 11am on July 28th, 2012.  She has never been seen or heard from again.  Her estranged husband, Tony Bledsoe, has a history of domestic violence and they were going through a divorce.  Latrice was in the process of moving from Memphis to St. Louis, Missouri at the time of her disappearance.  She was moving to get away from Tony after he broke her jaw.

Miranda Connor was picked up by an Uber at her home on February 3, 2023.  She was last seen in the early morning hours near an apartment complex in Federal Heights, Colorado.  Miranda was never heard from again.  Bloodhounds traced her scent to a piece of clothing she was believed to be wearing at the time of her disappearance.  They also traced her scent to a dumpster and a frozen over lake.  Miranda remains missing and her case remains unsolved, though authorities are handling it as a homicide.

Christine Mustafa was last seen leaving her job at a Walgreens in Phoenix, Arizona on May 10, 2017.  Christine’s family says Christine was afraid of her boyfriend and wanted to move out with the baby and get an order of protection against him.  Investigators found blood on their bed sheets, and Luminol, a chemical which detects hidden blood stains, indicated the presence of blood on their walls.  Her boyfriend was convicted of Murder in 2019, and was sentenced to the maximum term of 25 years and prison.  Authorities believed Christine’s remains were somewhere in a 2,652-acre landfill in Buckeye, Arizona, but an extensive search of the landfill turned up nothing.  Christine remains missing.

Natanalie “Naty” Perez was last seen at Burke’s Motel in Miami, Florida on June 1st, 2012.  Her boyfriend stated that had a fight and Natanalie walked out and never came back.  In the months prior to her disappearance, she had been uncharacteristically distant from her family.  Her family said answers to their questions were short and it seemed like someone was listening to their conversations.  Naty eventually reached out to her Aunt for help, who sent her cousins to come retrieve her.  When her cousins arrived, she was traumatized, her hair had been ripped out, her nails were flipped back and there was blood on her hands.  After only a short visit with her family, Naty insisted on returning to Miami, although her family begged her not to go.  She went, and has never been seen or heard from again.

This is your reminder that the media is filled with racism.  Gabby Petito remains one of the most well-known missing person’s cases, though her story deems no different than those of any of these women.  Except for one factor- Gabby Petito was white.  She was blasted on every news source, called America’s sweetheart, and was a primary concern for millions of people all over the world for months.  Women of color go missing in the exact same manner everyday, but the media will not give them attention.  To combat this, pay attention to where you’re getting your news from, stay informed on crime in your area, and if you see something, say something.
