Today is International Women’s Day! Each year on March 8th, women across the world celebrate women’s achievements, while calling for greater gender equality, and we should all get in on the action.
The first IWD was held in 1911, and the tradition has been growing ever since. Though there are many specific personal themes depending on local and organization, this year’s overall themes from the internationalwomensday.com global hub are Make it Happen, and Paint it Purple. Today we should encourage effective action for advancing and recognizing women not just in our own lives, but around the world.
Thousand of events by governments, organizations, charities, educational institutions, women’s groups, corporations, and the media are happening today to mark the economic, political, and social achievements of women in the past, present, and future. The UN, Oxfam, Care International, Women for Women, and WAGGGS are just a few of the many organizations running exciting awareness and fundraising campaigns for IWD.

Find out what events are happening around you, have a discussion with your friends about what International Women’s Day means to you, and find a way to celebrate! Throw a party, organize your own event event, raise or donate money to your favorite women-related cause, or just educate yourself about women’s global issues, do whatever you want, but we should all take note of this important day and what it means for women around the world.
We’ve accomplished a lot for women’s rights and gender equality, but many countries are still behind, and we’re not fully done ourselves. Women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, they’re not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health care, and experience of violence is still worse than men’s.
We should remember to appreciate and celebrate what women have gained in the past, while calling for the work that still needs to be done for gender equality.
