Quick Hit: Why Mindy Kaling is “Kaling” You Out

Mindy Kaling is a ridiculously successful actress, comedian, screenwriter, director, and producer. She is best known for her roles as “Kelly Kapoor” on NBC’s The Office and “Mindy Lahari” on Fox’s sitcom, The Mindy Project.  This exceedingly influential woman has reached an incredible level in her career in just a few years. Her quickly rising success, however, is not the only thing that is making a splash. Kaling is wonderfully unafraid of speaking her mind—when something rubs her the wrong way, you can bet your bottom dollar she is going to let you know.

In an interview with Parade Magazine, Kaling boldly translated the number 1 question reporters won’t stop asking her:

Kaling: I always get asked, “Where do you get your confidence?” I think people are well-meaning, but it’s pretty insulting. Because, what it means to me is, “You, Mindy Kaling, have all the trappings of a very marginalized person. You’re not skinny, you’re not white, you’re a woman. Why on earth would you feel like you’re worth anything?”

This brings up an important issue that marginalized individuals are confronted with every single day.  Kaling reminds society  that no matter how much a person strays from the norm, refuses to conform to the accepted values of society…no matter how many marginalized groups a person belongs to…that person has EVERY reason to feel great about his/herself.

If you want to hear more from Mindy, check out this AWESOME interview she did with Jimmy Kimmel. Kaling discusses backhanded compliments made about her weight, and why she chooses to wear the clothing she does:

We love you Mindy.
