Your Source for Feminist Discourse

Feminist Porn

In a recent interview via Cosmopolitan magazine, I learned a thing or two about what is considered “feminist porn” and where to find it. I was just as surprised as I came across the Cosmo spoof, as the magazine has never been one to flashbulb in my mind as inherently “feminist” whatsoever. Granted, it is mostly anti-feminist, but this interview gave me a new look on what individuals should be looking for in the porn industry.

Tristan Taormino described feminist porn as  “sex-positive, depict[ing] sexual consent and agency, and prioritizes female pleasure. So, you’re likely to see real female orgasms. Feminist porn features minorities underrepresented in mainstream porn, so you may see people of different gender identities and expressions, races, body types, or abilities. Those differences will not be fetishized or stereotyped, as some mainstream porn does (with race, for example).” These ideals alone spotlight that the porn industry is obviously not doing a very decent job with feminism. Drawing from ladychaotica’s post Feminism and Porn: Mutually Exclusive? I see this is a topic many people are still unsure of in terms of how feminist and how anti-feminist some pornos truly are.

This interview even gave a list of how to find the right porns that would excite the inner feminist within you, making it possible to explore the industry without the guilty conscious. My favorite aspect of feminist porn? Porn stars are paid a living wage, and they are happy to be doing their job.

What do you all think of porn being labeled “feminist” instead of allowing the viewer to decide? Check out some of those directors and decide for yourself!

Wow, I really appreciate you picking up where I left off on this issue. Such a great find! I love that there’s a middle ground here. Especially love that it’s public record that these actresses are paid a living wage, and are truly passionate about their work. Great read!
