Quick Hit: Race, Gender, and Oppression in the SlutWalk movement

For those of you that don’t religiously read like I do, I wanted to share an interesting article they linked to at racialicious. The piece talks about race and it’s interplay with sex at SlutWalk NYC. In short, a young girl showed up with a sign saying “Woman is the N***er of the World.”

Granted, the line is from a song by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. But the ultimate question raised in the article is ” can you appropriate a term like nigger if your body is not defined/terrorized/policed/brutalized/diminished by the word? Can we use it in a context that is supposed to belie gender solidarity, without explicitly being in racial solidarity?”

Just something to think about while you’re enjoying your otherwise lovely Sunday afternoon. Oh and when  you’re done thinking about that, go read this piece about white privilege in the OccupyWallStreet movement .

*Update* Right after I wrote this I found this awesome article at The Crunk Feminist Collective via Bitch magazine. It further explains the frustration many women of color feel toward the SlutWalk movement.
