Quick hit: a new feminist approach to Halloween

So, I know a lot of women who have been caught in the Halloween costume dilemma. We’ve discussed it here at our Bitchin’ Table. With Halloween this weekend, and stuck in the midst of Halloween costume drama, one of my best friends wrote an incredible blog post about slut shaming and Halloween at her tumblr, here. Seriously, read this, because it’s a fascinating perspective and it pretty much sums up everything I think about the male gaze/slut shaming trap that women fall into with Halloween costumes.

Read it, love it, worship Kenzie the way I do, etc. And have a safe, awesome Halloween for me since I’m currently chillin’ at the Days Inn in Roanoke ’cause it’s my little sister’s family weekend.

  1. I’m still not entirely convinced that going along with the trend toward sexualized halloween costumes equals “taking the power back” — because although it may contest the notion that all women who wear highly sexy/slutty costumes are “whores” it does not do anything to confront the dominant expectation that women should dress as sexual objects to be gazed upon.
