For this week’s newsroom, @livelaughlovecows and @westcoastfem covered the growth of women’s sports, the new SGA student body president, and the allegations involving Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.
For national news, after 30 years of notoriously underpaying female athletes, the WNBA and its players’ union reached a new agreement that raised the minimum salary of its players from $1.5 million to $7 million. This development coincides with our global news story, which focused on how women’s elite sports are projected to generate $3 billion in 2026, a 340% increase since 2022.
For our global news article, we covered the recent allegations of sexual abuse against Dolores Huerta, a labor leader, by political activist Cesar Chavez. Huerta recently came out with these allegations after 60 years of internalizing this horrible situation. Many other women, such as Debra Rojas and Ana Murguia, have also brought forward similar allegations against Chavez.
For local news, we discussed JMU’s new student body president, Jessica Abadji, and her fresh new perspective coming into her presidency. Abadji hopes to “push for a representative side of the organization, advocating for increased student attendance in Senate, town halls, forums, resolutions, and overall transparency.”
