In class, we have had several discussions that deal with the topics of self worth and body image. I found these topics to be particularly interesting. In fact, I figured that the two topics were related to each other in many ways. The sense of one’s inherent value as a person is heavily related to body perception. The way we look at our bodies and feel about our bodies has a very strong correlation with self worth and the way that we feel about ourselves. While this can often be a great thing, it can also be very dangerous for people who are not happy with their bodies. It’s important to realize that everyone is made in their own different shapes and sizes, therefore, not feeling worthy due to something one cant control such as the way that we look, is not a healthy way to live life.
Individuals who have a positive body perception tend to have higher self worth. When people are satisfied with their looks, they are often more apt to feel confident and self assured. On the other hand, negative body perception can severely impact self worth. Being too focused on one’s looks and never being satisfied is a dangerous road to go down that often leads to anything but happiness. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self loathing. Media representations of modern day beauty standards can often worsen the issue. This can lead to future issues with depression, anxiety, and other serious mental health issues.

An important way of combating this issue is fostering self worth interdependent on appearance. It’s important to focus on one’s strengths, character, and talents when thinking of self worth. It’s additionally important to think about the way you treat others. These are all much more important factors than one’s body. focusing too much on looks is superficial and does not lead to happiness. There’s always gonna be someone prettier, smaller, or larger. The grass is always greener on the other side. Fostering your self worth in your own appearance is not the way to go. It’s important to develop a resilience against society’s pressures in relation to body image. Society today often pushes an agenda focusing on being the slimmest or the prettiest. It is important to see these campaigns for what they are. It’s just a way to get you to feel bad about yourself and get them more money. Remember to not give in and let them win.

In conclusion, the relationship between self worth and body perception is a complex one with many layers. It can be a confusing thing to not love and feel good about yourself. It’s important to always remember to focus on your own positive strengths and positive characteristics instead of holding all your self worth in superficial areas such as the way that you look. When self worth is measured strictly on the way one looks, it often diminishes the importance of other characteristics. This is always a shame to see. There is so much beauty in people beyond the way that they look. Maintaining a positive view of yourself is crucial to having a healthy well-being. It’s important to remember to combat these dangers. Encouraging a balanced outlook on self worth and self acceptance is the key to having a positive feeling about your own self worth.
