After roe overturned: abortion policies in the us

What is Roe v. Wade?

This law was established in 1973 when a woman in Texas who went by the fictional name Jane Roe to protect her identity, filed a lawsuit against Henry Wade, a district attorney in Texas. She challenged the existing law in place that made it illegal for a woman to have an abortion unless the pregnant woman’s life was being threatened. The Supreme Court sided with Jne Roe in a 7-2 decision and established that woman have the right to have an abortion within the first 24 weeks of the pregnancy.

In 2022, this policy was overturned after being in rule for over 50 years. What does this mean? States are now given the right to decide their own stances on this issue and hold elections to make this decision. Since this 14 states have banned abortion completely. This means that women who are not in the position where their life is being threatened are not legally allowed to have an abortion.

Now it is time to talk about what this means for women and how many women feel about the government controlling the right to their own bodies. It is important to discuss that these bans and the overturning of Roe v. Wade is just banning safe abortions in these states. Many women who feel strongly about wanting to have an abortion and are in the position that they are looking to get one, will find a way to get this procedure done. By having states banning abortions they are promoting women to get procedures done unsafely or having women trying to mimic or perform types of procedures themselves. Although, personally I do not think I could have an abortion because of my own personal opinions, however I firmly believe that all women should have the right to have the choice of getting an abortion if that is something they feel that they need/want to do. There are many cases that may contribute to a women wanting an abortion such as if they conceived the child due to a rape, are not financially stable, are not ready to have a child, or are simply not wanting a child. All of these cases are valid reasons for wanting and abortion and a women should not need to give an explanation or reason to get an abortion they should have the choice no matter the circumstance.

In addition, I firmly believe that abortion rights should not be a political discussion or something that the government has a say in. This is a healthcare issue. Healthcare professionals and providers should be the ones taking the lead on abortion and are the ones we should be listening to as this is a medical procedure and it is their knowledge and expertise that knows about abortions.

This is also something that should be women’s choice. Having men tell women what they can or cannot do with their bodies is something that should not be taking place. Unless, you have a uterus you should not have the right to tell a women what to do in this situation. Men do not and will never understand being pregnant and also what this entails for a women. Having women being forced into having a child that do not want is not right. And this can lead to issues with their child. A mother who does not want their child can lead to a negative childhood, neglectance, or a felling of resentment towards the child. Also, in the cases that a women wants an abortion because she is not financially stable can lead to so many issues like homelessness, not being able to provide the necessary care that a child needs, and so much more.

Abortion is an extremely controversial issue and many people have different viewpoints on this issue. I think it is important for people to truly educate themselves on this issue and for men to understand that they will never understand the position that this puts women in. There have been many protests and actions taken to try to get these points across and it is important for everyone to listen to these women with open ears.

  1. I definitely think that the government should have no say in what women do with their bodies. The tampon tax, for example, is another example of unfair circumstances for women who have no control over how their bodies function. I think that the topic of abortion should be handled by health professionals and only them. Many legislators who voted against abortions are men, which is unfair for them to have a say in something they will never have to experience.
