My body my choice

When it comes to abortion, not too many people have neutral feelings about the topic. This is one of those issues that many people strongly agree with having the option to have an abortion and think it is right. There is also a large percentage of people who think having an abortion is morally wrong.

To be more exact, as of June of 2022, 61 percent of Americans agree that abortion should be legal; leaving 40 percent of Americans to have strong negative views on abortion.

Now, I’m sure that as you’re reading this you have already thought of your personal beliefs about abortion. Whichever side you think is “right”, it is likely that at least one close friend or family member of yours have opposing viewpoints. I think this is a fair assumption because at least for me, i have a few friends that have STRONG opposing opinions from mine.

This is never something that has caused any problems in my relationships, but it is interesting to have a civil conversation with someone that sees abortion from a whole different perspective.

I am a strong believer in ‘my body, my choice’. Any female should have control and access with anything that has to do with HER body.  As I tend to lean more conservative in most government topics, I see this as just personal decency and something that the government should have no effect on. (This is the same type of issue for me as same sex marriage. I believe it 100% should be allowed and encouraged.)

Since when did who you love and your own body’s rights turn into something the government can dictate?

People may act like getting an abortion is an easy thing to do when its not. Going through that can really take a tole on a women and potentially cause trauma. But at the end of the day, if someone isnt ready to be a mom or could not support a child financially, that should be completely understood.

I know this topic is very controversial, but at the end of the day, why should it be anyone’s business on what someone else decides to do in this situation?

I know a couple girls from my highschool who had gotten an abortion and the word spread like wildfire. I felt terrible for these girls because everyone quickly found out and was looking at it as such a bad or embarrassing thing. Also, you know how highschool people can be.

These poor girls were getting joked about whether it was to their faces or behind their backs. Meanwhile I’m thinking, “holy crap. I would do the exact same thing in this situation.”

If I found out at 16 I was pregnant, personally I know I could not give that baby the best life at that time. And the last thing I want would be to make that my parents’ responsibility. They’re done with kids. They’ve been done since the day I came home from the hospital. Again, this is all my own personal views and experiences and all I know is that having an abortion as an option has helped out so many women.

America wouldn’t be America without all these aggressive opposing views anyway. As I completely respect people who are pro-life and would never get an abortion, all I hope is for the same respect from pro-lifers if a woman chooses to go that route.

  1. I think this was a very honest post, I also strongly believe in my body my choice for various reasons and many similar to yours. I also have friends who are very strongly against these views and topics like this can cause tension between us since roe v. wade was overturned.
