Quick Hit: Gillibrand and McCaskill- No more college sexual assault!

Although these two Democratic senators are clear that sexual assault needs to stop, they weren’t always so friendly with each other on how to stop it. Democrat Gillibrand and Democrat McCaskill both proposed bills to end sexual assault in the military, a fierce battle that ended with McCaskill’s bill being passed. Now, the two women are working together to create better focus on combating sexual assault as it occurs on college campuses.

The two women are composing a letter to call to action that more federal funding needs to happen in order to combat something so prevalent on university campuses. Gillibrand announced:

“When our young people go on to higher education, it should be an opportunity to learn, grow, pursue their dreams and prepare for their future careers,” Gillibrand said. “But the price of a college education should not include a 1 in 5 chance of being sexually assaulted. America’s colleges and universities are the best in the world. But it is simply unacceptable that they become havens for rape and sexual assault.

Earlier this year President Obama proposed a task force to combat the crimes committed on university campuses, and that task force should be announcing their decisions later this year.

  1. Awesome update on this bill! I can’t wait to see what Obama’s administration does to put it into effect as the year goes on.
