In an interview for April’s issue of ELLE Magazine, Pamela Anderson muses about life as a short-haired chick since cutting off her long blonde tresses back in October. The former Baywatch star (I’m not really sure she’s done anything since then? Home Improvement?) reportedly thought her short hair would have an impact on her sex life.

She told ELLE:
“I thought it would be weird having sex with short hair but then I kind of got into the mode.”
Anderson’s attitude towards short hair seems quite old-fashioned to me. I’m consistently surprised by people who claim that women with short hair are somehow less feminine. Personally, I feel it’s an issue we should have moved passed long long ago because I simply fail to see any significant correlation between hair length and gender performance. I wish I could say it’s a non-issue but time and time again I find that in fact it is.
And even Anderson herself admits that after the initial adjustment period, her short hair made her feel “powerful” and “even more feminine.” My question then is why did she feel the need to cut her short to begin with if she didn’t think she would feel confident with it?
What do you guys think about Pamela Anderson’s interview? Why is it still such a big deal for women to have short hair?

Really interesting article and topic. First of all, she looks great with her new hair change. I do agree with you in that gender should not be associated with hair length, but unfortunately I think that’s just a societal norm for men to have short hair and women to have long hair. However, I think today its slowly but surely becoming mutual. I see more and more celebs like Pam Anderson (Jennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus, Anne Hathaway, etc.) cutting their hair extremely short, which is awesome in my view because more normal people, like ourselves are willing to do the same. As for the empowering thing once they do, it may be because they know they’re breaking those norms. They’re doing something out of the ordinary for women–under the societal norm of only having long hair–and it enhances their feminist mojo. That’s what I think might be the cause of female empowerment when cutting your hair to a typical men’s length. But, women should ultimately feel empowered no matter what hair length.

Pamela Anderson really does look great! I like that you brought up how short hair seems to be a trend among women celebs right now. Over the summer I cut my hair to a really short length and then after that I started seeing a lot of others doing the same (most notably Beyonce) and not that I wasn’t confident about cutting my hair before, but it definitely made me feel more empowered in a way because like you said it’s almost like it enhances my “feminist mojo”.
