Homophobia on college campuses is nothing new unfortunately. With instances of homophobia happening almost instantly, it can be hard to find outlets and organizations that promote equality across campuses, involving both LGBT and ally students. One organization, though, is getting real about the problem.
The Get REAL campaign is open to any and all that wish to stand up and speak out against discrimination, promote equality, and commits to starting discourse on eliminating homophobia on college campuses.
Get REAL is more than a club, and more than an organization; we are a movement of likeminded students who work tirelessly to change homophobic language and attitude.
This week, I interviewed Mount Allison University’s Get REAL Co-Coordinator Maddy Hill about homophobia on college campuses and what the organization aims to do to improve environments for all students and eliminate bullying.
The sound and video seemed to not link up at all part (sorry yall!) because apparently my apartment wifi was not equipped for the task. But the audio is all there so put your NPR ears on and enjoy!
Some of the projects Maddy discusses includes the “To My 7th Grade Self” campaign which is a beautiful reflective video of bullies talking to their 7th grade selves. It definitely made me rethink some of my actions when I was younger and makes me want to talk to my cousin who is currently in middle school about how her and her friends talk about bullying or homophobic language.
Another great campaign I loved was partnering with different sports teams on campus. Homophobia in sports is a growing problem and seeing student athletes stand up for equality was pretty awesome.
