I know there are a lot of commercials out there that are very stereotypical about womens’ roles in society. Such commercials are cleaning products or cooking products for stay at home moms and makeup commercials about women’s self conscience about their aging beauty. But I think its important to highlight those commercials that are out there trying to breaking that mold.
This is probably the first set of commercials that I have actually seen highlighting women in a new positive light in a long time. The new Dr. Pepper commercials 1/1. These commercials are trying to say that by drinking Dr. Pepper you are supporting unique and inspirational women but you are also one as well. The four women who are featured in their own commercials are Leandra Medine aka Man Repeller, Misty Copeland, Mikaela Mayer, and Jen Mayfield. Each are women who broke a mold and set their sights on something higher then themselves and some people deem impossible to do.
You can watch them all on Dr. Pepper’s website on the 1/1 commercials link…. which is at that bottom on this post if you want to watch the videos before you read more.
I just want to focus on two commercials that i think represent the message of Dr. Pepper’s 1/1 and highlights these inspirational women the best. The two commercials/interviews i want to focus on are Leandra Medine and Mikaela Mayer, who’s both interviews I have not actually seen aired.

The first commercial is with Leandra Medine aka Man Repeller. She is a fashion blogger that will definitely speak her mind on any fashion topic. She says she will talk about things that women will be thinking but most likely will never say. From her video you can tell she is a cooky kind of person who is one in her own and not afraid to be different or try different things. One thing she says about fashion that is very true and never really though about is that,”fashion is a nice way to try to escape what you are trying to forget about and step into another character”. And she definitely is a character all on her own. I read some posts in her blog and there were things about fashion I have thought about being a woman who loves fashion and will follow certain new trends and how this affects me as a woman. If you want to read more I will post her blog’s link at the bottom of this post.

The other person’s interview I want to focus on is Mikaela Mayer who is a model turned Olympic boxing hopeful. I thought she was so inspiring because she broke this huge stereotype which she says was not very orthodox for women to do. This is being a model who also has another career which is one you would never expect for a model to do or be able to do. In her video she talks about herself and she says she is feminine and very girly, but she likes the rush that comes with punching someone in the face. I like how she says you can be both feminine and a strong female athlete at the same time. She also in her interview starts to talk about how boxing put her on a better track then what she was on in high school. I think if in her interview that was focused little bit more maybe she would be a good spokeswoman for teenage girls who need some kind of passion in their life to focus on to stay out of trouble.
I do think even though all of these commercials are so great at highlighting women and their unique talents and passions that the two “interview commercials” that have not been aired on TV, Leandra Medine and Mikaela Mayer, are actually the most controversial ones which is probably why they are not aired. Yes Dr. Pepper is still giving highlight to these amazing women but I think they are afraid of the backlash that might come with of these commercials being aired. But hopefully they are just waiting to air them and we will be able to see them in the future.

I loveeeeee this post! I loved both of the interviews, but especially the boxing one. Mikaela is gorgeous and yet so strong and powerful as a woman, and as a human being in general. She is so accomplished and I think she sets a GREAT role model for un and coming young girls, especially ones who are interested in athletics. Great post!
