Quick Hit: Iowa and Gay Marriage: Personal and Political

When you think about Iowa, you think cornfields, tornadoes, and old-fashioned thinking. Therefore, when I saw the title of this clip Two Lesbians Raised a Baby and This is What They Got, I expected to see something degrading a lesbian couple and their child. Surprisingly, I watched as a passionate young male stood and fought to bring honor and equality to his parents. His love for his family and desire for their equality shows in his confidence, posture, and speech. He fights for his family and those like his stating that voting against same-sex marriage is “voting for the first time to codify discrimination into our constitution”.  His most powerful statement for equality came when he told the chairman that “you are telling Iowan citizens, that some among you are second-class citizens, that do not have the right to marry the person you love”. If those words don’t move that chairman and its committee, then I doubt Iowa has much hope for the future…other than their corn.

  1. I lived 12.5 years in Iowa. Granted I was in a liberal college town, Ames, but I saw lots of support for liberal causes. The focus on the Republican primary makes it seem like Iowa is filled with a bunch of religious bigots. It;s not.
