On October 28, 2011, Queen Elizabeth II as well as members of 16 Commonwealth countries approved changes to the royal thrown succession, and declared these new changes will soon take effect. Future sons and daughters of the United Kingdom monarch under this new succession law, both have equal right to the throne. To further internationalcupcakebandit’s quick hit, the old succession law enacted over three centuries asserts the heir to the throne must be the eldest son, regardless if the daughter’s age precedes her brothers’. The exception to this law is if the daughter has no brothers, then the daughter is allowed to become Queen, which is seen with Queen Elizabeth II, who at present is the second longest British monarch.
In addition, the prohibition of a monarch marrying a Roman Catholic will be removed, as well as the mandate of future prospects to obtain approval from the monarch before marrying. So my Catholic girlfriends, I suggest flying to the UK soon because Harry still hasn’t wed! Ultimately as the media has honed in on, if Prince William and Princess Katherine conceive first a daughter, this new ‘Succession to the Crown’ bill will permit their daughter to become Queen.
As we know, the UK monarch no longer has the political power it once had. This political power was transferred to the UK Parliament. Yet, the UK monarch still holds great influence over political, social, and economic issues within the UK borders and afar. Therefore, the reversal of the UK’s Succession to the Crown bill implies that future eldest monarch daughters will have an equal opportunity to influence the world at large, irrespective of birth order.
Prime Minister David Cameron addressed this revolutionary decision and stated:
“The idea that a younger son should become monarch instead of an elder daughter simply because he is a man, or that a future monarch can marry someone of any faith except a Catholic – this way of thinking is at odds with the modern countries that we have become” (BBC).
This latest succession bill is taking on the issues of self-determination, religious intolerance, and gender discrimination, within the monarchy. This bill is a historical landmark in that it comprehends where the United Kingdom has evolved into, and is actively deciding in what direction it should further advance into.
Furthermore, of the 12 Great Britain and United Kingdom monarchs, 3 of these have been Queens i.e. Anne, Victoria, and Elizabeth II. Sex instead of age as the determining factor in who will rule is absurd, and is misogynistic. Go figure. A country’s policies represent the true socio-economic and political nature of the society. It was time for United Kingdom to puts its forwarding thinking ideologies into political action. Moreover, Queen Elizabeth II mentioned this bill will not only impact the future of monarchal women, but of women in society, “It [Succession to the Crown bill] encourages us to find ways to show girls and women to play their full part” (BBC). Women as leaders have and will continue to evolve our world as seen with Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. However, the world must provide avenues for women to engender such an alteration. And, these avenues must be created by a unified, worldly coalition of both men and women, as the 16 Commonwealths of the United Kingdom have done.
