If a feminist votes in the woods, does anyone hear it?

Alright fellow inhabitants of the college age-bracket!  It’s that time again.  (& No, I don’t mean time for the Britney episode of Glee.)  It’s MIDTERM ELECTION TIME!

Ahh, can’t you just smell the ballots in the air?

But here’s the thing.  I’m scared and you should be too.

Watch this

Now, I didn’t add this video JUST because I’m slightly (completely?) obsessed with Jon Stewart. I added it because… it’s true. There is no such thing as a “new” right. The Republican platform is the same as it’s always been.

We as college students-and, more specifically FEMINIST college students-voted in record amounts in the 2008 election.  And big things happened.  We protected reproductive justice and made significant strides in the fight for equality.

But I worry that the success of our last election may have lulled our ipod-wielding, social network loving, multitasking generation into a false sense of security.  WE ARE NOT SAFE.  If you don’t want to see your congress filled with the bright, shining faces of tea-party supporters who will oppose the abolition of DADT, and “protect families” by ending a woman’s right to choose and being general roadblocks in the fight for an American citizen’s right to marry, then SAY SO.

Otherwise we’re going to find ourselves in the red.  Literally.  In the very VERY right red.

So please vote.  Please.  Make your voice heard.  It’s more important now than ever before.

Information for voting as a college student can be found here.

  1. I can see how the way Democrats use women/queer people is insanely frustrating, but I’d rather vote for them than Republicans who have anti-woman/anti-gay sentiments written into their platform. And I can’t just not vote, as much as I would like to sometimes. I figure that someone actually had to go to prison for me to have this right, so I will exercise my rights, even if it means voting for someone who is only using me. Ah, politics.
