Blogging with Feminists 101

Welcome to the first semester of ShoutOut! JMU, this is a continuation of a previous blog but with an entirely new focus.  The focus of this blog was previously for the sake of informing students about women’s studies classes and events, however as you will see later on in my introduction we’re taking it in a new direction.  Like much of the feminist community we’re a rag-tag band of misfits, sometimes with little more in common than our passion for human rights and our vision for this blog.  More specifically we’re students at JMU, concerned that our campus, which is predominantly female, reflects too few values that support women, and that the voices of women and minority students are  frequently drowned out by a male centered culture. The vision for this blog is to create a space in which female and minority voices may safely express and interact with concerns, experiences, and critiques of both JMU culture and national/international culture.  We hope that through the blog students will engage in informed discussion on sometimes controversial topics and give students a better understanding of feminism and feminist concerns.

For your consideration, the following is an interview by Stephen Colbert with Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda. The interview addresses the state of feminism now and concerns about women’s representation in media. (Video is linked because it won’t imbed.)

  1. What a fabulous introduction to our blog! Thanks

I particularly enjoyed that Colbert clip and Fonda & Steinam’s greenstonemedia.net intro! Plus, I mean there’s nothing quite like an apple pie baked by a feminist…

  2. I love that people are willing to discuss feminism, not as a movement of the past, but as a current and relevant activist movement. Nice work, Steinem, Fonda and Colbert.
