8 Things that pissed me off about the State of the Union Address

Strap in because I am about to keyboard rant about all of the things that were so wrong with Trump’s address. As expected, it was an absolute dumpster fire circus performance of misleading statements, fearmongering, and bold face lies. Here are 8 things that made me want to throw a brick at my TV.

  1. The war on DEIA initiatives
  • Not only did Trump put an insane halt to DEIA initiatives, he BRAGGED about it. He labeled these policies (where the entire point is to spark inclusivity) “unfair” and “divisive.” The only reason these policies exist in the first place is because of generations of obvious and targeted, unfair, and divisive discrimination. Completely gutting these programs is going to have a devastating effect on the advancements this country has made in leveling the playing field for marginalized groups. All this does is continue to push the white man’s advantages.
  1. Immigration fear mongering
  • Donald Trump is no stranger to xenophobia, as we know, and boy, did he let us know during his poor excuse for a speech. He made a disgusting attempt to defend his harsh border policies by digging up the same crime stories about undocumented immigrants that he has used before. While I understand that these crimes happen (not even close to the rates that native-born Americans commit them) and yes, they are devastating, Donald Trump does not give a rat’s ass about these victims. He cares about rallying his own base and gaining approval.
  1. Bold face lies about the state of our economy
  • It makes my blood boil to watch this wanna-be dictator stand up there and lie that our economy thrives more than ever under his command. It simply is. not. true. Right now, we are dealing with rising prices, falling GDP, fear of another recession, federal layoffs because of tariffs, and so much uncertainty around the nation. The middle class is literally the backbone of this country, but still, he continues to screw them over and over without any accountability or care in the world.
  1. Free speech hypocrisy
  • Trump claims he has “stopped all government censorship” however, when Al Green protested Trump’s fallacies in the chamber, he was literally forcibly removed within the first 10 minutes of the speech. They played this off as him being disruptive; meanwhile, between Trump’s every sentence, the Republican party representatives were allowed to chant “USA, USA, USA” like a bunch of sophomoric frat guys. The hypocrisy is so obviously apparent that it is almost funny. Free speech until it doesn’t favor you, though, right, Donald?
  1. His insincere “unity” tangent
  • Trump babbled like a two-year-old about bipartisanship when his entire campaign had demonized Democrats, the press, and anyone else who, God forbid, might disagree with what he says. Unity does not mean sitting and rolling over while he laughs in the face of democracy.
  1. Disregard for climate change
  • It’s not like I really expected him to say much about climate change, but I don’t know. I thought he might address this critically pressing matter. All he did was brag about getting rid of the “wasteful” policies that Biden implemented. Trump’s best friends are just raking in the cash while destroying our planet so why would he care that the planet is literally on fire? His silence speaks volumes to the things he cares about.
  1. Border policy lies
  • So apparently, according to him, the border crisis has been “solved.” I’m not quite sure what his definition of solved is, but it certainly does not mean kids being stranded in detention centers or asylum seekers continuing to be completely abandoned with no safe options. I have yet to see an actual reform plan at all.
  1. No plan for healthcare
  • This guy had four years to create some sort of plan that would benefit the millions of Americans without healthcare. So, what has he done five years later? The answer is nothing at all. Hospitals are closing due to a lack of staff, prescription drug prices are going up every day, and too many Americans are still uninsured.

So there it is: no solutions to very real problems, excessive fear mongering, and flat-out lies. These are my takeaways from this chaotic, self-aggrandizing monologue, The President’s Address to the Joint Session of Congress.
