When people think of a country music singer, they typically picture a white man in a cowboy hat and boots with a banjo or guitar by his side. This is how country music has been represented in the United States and around the world for as long as I can remember. Country music has been branded as white and consumed mainly by white people, but now there is a new sheriff in town, and she is a black woman.
Beyonce has become a household name since her days as a member of the famous trio Destiny’s Child over thirty years ago, but it was not until recently that she decided to go country. Beyonce’s career has been illustrious. Individually, she has been nominated for 99 Grammys and won 32 of them. It is safe to say that she proved herself as one of the most successful musicians of all time years ago. She took home nine Grammys alone in 2023. She had nothing left to prove.
In March of 2024, Beyonce released the album Cowboy Carter. This album was a shock to fans as she left her traditional pop and soul roots and opted to leap onto the country scene. The album immediately blasted up the Billboard charts and took the world by storm. Cowboy Carter was widely accepted by Beyonce’s fans and opened their eyes to the world of country music. The same thing happened vice versa; country music fans were introduced to the talent of Beyonce, myself included. Yes, I knew her hits but had no idea the depth she has as an artist. Cowboy Carter introduced me to a whole new kind of music I previously had not paid attention to.
Many wonder why Beyonce chose to deviate from her usual style of music and pursue a new direction. Some assume she wanted to embrace her home as she is from Houston, Texas, a mecca for country music. Others believe she got bored and wanted to try something new, I hypothesize that she conquered everything else, so why not try country music? Not only did she try, but she excelled. Thanks to Cowboy Carter, Beyonce became the first Black woman to win Country Album of the Year at the Grammys. This is a monumental feat that opens the door for black women in country music.
Beyonce is a pioneer in country music who brings different aspects of her musical style to the table in her country music. Her song Texas Holdem, the most popular off the album, incorporates a mix of pop and country and creates the catchy and respected song it is. Cowboy Carter revolutionized country music and I doubt it is the last we will hear of Beyonce in this genre. Beyonce and Cowboy Carter have invited the world to enjoy country music and the country world to enjoy Beyonce’s music. I believe Cowboy Carter will pave the way for a new kind of country music and will inspire black women all over the world that they too can make country music.
