Skinny Jeans and Self-Confidence

We all know social media influencer Alix Earle who’s famous for her “Get Ready With Me” videos and beauty advice. Her fans admire her for keeping it real and sharing her personal life. In mid-January, Earle collaborated with the brand Frame to launch her pair of skinny jeans called “The Alix”. The Gen Z influencer created a blue wash ($128) and black coated finish pair ($148) of jeans. After taking over most closets in the 2000s and 2010s, these tight-hugging skinny jeans were left behind. But now, skinny jeans are making a comeback. Y2K fashion has slowly been creeping its way back into the spotlight. For example, clothing items such as mini skirts, animal prints, and baby tees. This comeback, sparked by Gen Z, was influenced by nostalgia. Alix is trying to bring back skinny jeans which has sparked controversy and put her in a difficult position because she expressed her love for them. These jeans are a controversial topic as many people revealed that they don’t like the style or find them uncomfortable. On the other hand, some people never gave up skinny jeans. The Millennial generation appears to wear more skinny jeans than other generations as it was the fashion trend at the time. Whether you are for the comeback or not, Alix has made an impact as both pairs of jeans are sold out online. With high levels of demand, she has made a preorder option available.

The fit of these jeans is described as a stretchy pair of denim that fits snugly around the waist and legs. Earle’s jean sizes range from 23-34 which isn’t that broad and excludes lots of women. Many like the slim fit while others say that skinny jeans are uncomfortable and restrict movement. Once skinny jeans became outdated, several other styles of jeans became fashionable such as straight-leg, barrel jeans, mom jeans, and baggy jeans. Baggy jeans have become increasingly popular due to their comfy more relaxed fit. Being a looser-fitted jean, the main appeal to many is they offer a less restrictive fit.

The stereotype of skinny jeans has been around for quite a while. Specifically, body type has been a key factor in conversations about skinny jeans. However, body positivity is now changing the fashion industry. This movement has encouraged individuals to embrace their body shapes and wear what they want to wear. To tune out society’s beauty standards and be confident in your own skin. In the past, skinny jeans were stereotyped as only thin people could wear them because they had the ideal body type. This notion became engraved in individual’s heads creating insecurity. There was a lack of self-confidence in women’s perceptions of their body shapes. Whether they feel they don’t have the desired hips, legs, or stomach. There’s this idea in the back of people’s minds that they need to look a certain way to fit in. In a shifting world, beauty standards have changed but people still compare themselves to others. There’s this idea in the back of people’s minds that they need to look a certain way to fit in. It’s a questionable topic as people have now gotten so used to wearing other jeans because of the baggier, more comfortable fit that they simply have no desire to wear skinny jeans.
