On Monday, November 4th, 2024, doglover501 and I discussed these three news stories;
Our local news story is about a worried mother, Jennifer Alcombright, raising concerns about her and her children being pushed out of their home at Foxhill Townhomes due to management prioritizing student living. Alcombright and her family have lived there for four years, but Artcraft Management recently enforced stricter lease rules, by claiming there are too many people in the unit. Therefore, one of her sons moved out thinking that was the only issue, but it didn’t end there. Then management said that everyone living there needed their own individual lease because her children are now over 18. With that, Alcombright said renewing their lease is “…just undoable” (Johnson, 2024). Jennifer is also disabled due to a car accident and she can’t work full-time, so she relies on her children for support. They support her with each of them having a job, which are all a walkable distance. They don’t have any vehicle as well for transportation, so if they are pushed out of their home they would lose their jobs. Along with that, one of her sons used to have a motorcycle but he had to sell it due to no spaces in the lot because of students and the Artcraft management prioritized the students parking more than the locals.
Our National news story is about a “terrifying” ad that brings up the significant effects of banning abortion. The Progress Action Fund, a Democratic political action committee, recently launched an ad showing what would happen if the Republican party wins the 2024 election again making Donald Trump president. The “Terrifying” ad shows a pregnant woman lying on the ground dying, screaming in pain with her worried spouse next to her on the phone with Dr. Davis. The husband asks the doctor what he should do. He then said that the woman needs an abortion or she will die. It is then when an old white man appears on the screen and says, “I am a Republican Congressman; now that we are in charge, we banned abortions, no exceptions. I won the last election, so it’s my decision. But don’t worry, you can still have children, but not with her” (Conley, 2024).
Our International news story is about Anna Kindrick, who directed, and played the leading role as Cheryl Bradshaw, in the film Women of The Hour and how she donated all of her earnings from it to charity. The movie explores Bradshaw’s encounter with Rodney Alcala in “The Dating Game.” Alcala, later known as The Dating Game Killer, was convicted of murdering five women and accused of inappropriate behavior with minors. The plot goes into the unsettling and dangerous situations many women face. A week before the film was set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Kendrick took to press to explain how she felt “gross” for making this movie. She said, “I sort of asked myself the question, ‘Do you feel gross about this?’ And I did. It wasn’t until the week before the TIFF that I thought, ‘Oh, the movie is going to make money’” (Paul, 2024). She said, “I went from being like, ‘Let me know when the movie happens,’ to being like, ‘Oh God, I am responsible for this’” (Paul, 2024) she told the press. In response to his realization, Kendrick donated her salary to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), and the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime. “It’s still a complicated area, but that felt like the least I should do” (Paul, 2024).
