By now I am sure we have all heard about Sean Combs aka P. Diddy’s arrest, and if not allow me to go into a brief overview of the situation. Diddy has been facing backlash since 2023 when his ex-girlfriend filed a lawsuit against him claiming he took part in sex trafficking and she accused him of years of abuse. He quickly settled the lawsuit within a day but other women came forward over the next 9 months filing similar lawsuits. All other lawsuits are being fought in court and his team has released many statements discounting all accusations.

This, however, makes me wonder. He was quick to settle the lawsuit of his ex-girlfriend but the other women who came forward as well are all liars and just looking for money and fame? The topic of sexual assault allegations against celebrities and other prominent personalities has been a dicey topic for a while. Some people believe many of the women who come forward are liars or exaggerating their stories to get media recognition. Whereas other people believe the women who come forward because it also gives them a lot of backlash.

Picking a side is a simple choice for me. I will believe the woman to a certain extent… I understand some women will try to manipulate the situation, lie about scenarios to gain fame, or simply deface someone’s reputation. However, the stigma surrounding women who lie about sexual assault is incredibly problematic. It is important to understand how difficult it is for a woman to come forward publicly about such an intimate and traumatic situation.

Focusing solely on the fact that a woman might be lying causes many problems. The women who do come forward with true accusations lose credibility and it is harder for them to get justice. But this is not entirely society’s fault. The women who come forward with false accusations are just as problematic. They are perpetuating a system of defacing women’s credibility and making it difficult for women with true accusations to come forward.

Society has a lot of flaws and women tend to be on the receiving end of many of those. Women are called liars and crazy when they’ve finally had enough and decide to speak out. This perpetuates a system of oppression and we need to do more to fight. Women need to support women and give each other platforms to speak out. The women who are so self-obsessed they don’t care if they affect someone else’s credibility need to get it together and grow up. Working towards equality is more important than your 15 minutes of fame. Society also needs to do better and be better. Women have something to say and we are tired of yelling at the backs of men.
