Let’s be super for real right now, you thought you ate by reposting that black square for black lives matter? Y’all cracked me up with that. Or when celebrities get cancelled for their views? But you don’t even know the topic, you just look over the articles or ear hustling from other people. How can you form your own opinion if you don’t even know what’s going on? Why does something have to happen to you or a loved one for you to say something? That does not make you an ally.
Now that I have your attention, 4 million Floridian women lost their right to have an abortion.
On May 1st Florida passed a bill enacting a strict ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, joining several other states in implementing such restrictive legislation. The passage of this bill has reignited the ongoing debate surrounding reproductive rights, sparking both fervent support and vehement opposition. But what are you doing about it? Just a repost. Let me get you hip to what’s going on. What is the ban? Women can no longer access legal abortions in Florida past the sixth week of pregnancy, except in rare circumstances. The “nearest” women can go to get an abortion is Illinois not to mention the funds they must put in for travelling that’s probably already going to be well over $200, so what about the cost in total? Yes, there is a 15-week exception but let’s be honest they care more about the paperwork. Who put this plan in motion? Check it, Floridian mayor, Ron DeSucksass gathered a bunch of his anti-abortion activists last spring in his Capitol office for an informal bill signing. Guess what time it was? O dark thirty behind closed doors. Ron’s “smart” move is backfiring left and right, don’t get me wrong some people are agreeing (the wrong ones) but State Senator Lauren Book said, “This was done to help Ron DeSantis in his ambitious play to run for president, it didn’t work, and it has really created dire, dangerous consequences for women” (Mazzei 2024). So, what can you do to help? Do. Your. Own. Research. See if your county or town has nearby planned parenthood and if they don’t how can you or other people in your town change that. Follow accounts that pop your privilege bubble, follow @feminist on Instagram, an amazing account to start with and then you can blossom from there. But, as far as helping Florida here is what we can all do; On April 1st, The Florida Supreme Court ruled that Amendment 4, to limit government interference with abortion in Florida, meets the requirement to be on this year’s ballot and if you haven’t already please sign up to vote! Silence is compliance. One last thing you can do is donate to abortion funds in Florida. You can spend $45 for a fill every other week but can’t donate $5 for someone who just got their reproductive rights snatched from them. Also, reproductive rights are more to it than just abortion if you didn’t know. I’m not going to sit here and act like I fought for reproductive rights all my life, it had to take an unfortunate circumstance in my life for me to care. And a ton of uncomfortable moments and talks to get here, be comfortable with the uncomfortable. In a world where gender stereotypes persist, let’s remember: strength knows no gender, it knows only the power of humanity.
