The effects of the #MeToo movement on workplace culture

When the Me-Too movement came out it sparked a conversation in the workplace about inappropriate behaviors that women and their peers had experienced throughout their careers. As women began to share their stories, a collective realization emerged; they had experienced similar inappropriate behaviors throughout their careers.  The point of this movement is not only to expose the wrongdoings and the people who committed these acts, but it is also to foster an environment for women where they feel safe in the workplace and empowered to speak on the events that impacted them. When women in these positions started to become empowered it broke the silence in the workplace and led to the shattering of this kind of locker room environment that had promoted the inappropriate behavior experienced by so many.

What do we mean by inappropriate behavior in the workplace? Well, as this movement started and stories were being shared many of the same kinds of things began to surface. There were tales of unwarranted advances, dismissive attitudes, and discriminatory practices. When the same stories started to cycle through it became obvious that this was a systemic issue in the workplace not just a collection of isolated incidents. The shared narratives created a sense of solidarity among women, fostering a community that refused to accept this improper behavior as the norm. This was no longer individual voices but instead became a collective that demanded respect, equality, and an end to the tolerance of inappropriate behaviors. The Me-Too movement brought to light the everyday concerns of hard-working women and encouraged them to share their stories, come together, and work towards getting rid of the barriers that may have kept them from moving forward.

What can we as men do to make sure we are creating an inclusive environment in the workplace?

Respect diversity and inclusion- embrace the diversity of your colleague’s cultures and backgrounds and try to learn from them.

Mind your language- make sure to use inclusive and respectful language that doesn’t discriminate against anyone.

Maintain professional boundaries– try to avoid conversations that are too personal and keep discussions focused on work.

Consent– not that there should ever be any physical contact at work, but if for some reason there is, such as a hug or a high five make sure that all parties involved are fully consenting.

Educate yourself- we live in a world that moves and changes so quickly so make sure that you are staying informed on the evolving workplace norms and societal expectations.

  4. Thank you for writing about this topic! It is so important to educate others on what behavior is appropriate in professional spaces, and many women can feel unsafe talking to other coworkers about inappropriate conduct. I like how you addressed this educationally and with the stance of informing men on how to act appropriately, this is definitely an important topic that should be talked about more!
