CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Cops Joke About Rape & Robbery

**TRIGGER WARNING: cops acting like assholes and joking about rape**

A video leaked on Ebaumsworld.com features two Austin Police Officers, Michael Castillo and Mark Lytle, caught on their dashboard camera making disgusting remarks and just generally being sh*tty people.

When I viewed the clip I was horrified that these are the people that are supposed to protect us. The video starts by with them talking about how they didn’t put someone’s statement into a police report. One of the officers says that he was “uncooperative” and that he didn’t want to report his side. The other officer laughs and says he needs to retrain him, yet they keep the lax jokes and unprofessional behavior coming.

They then go on to say that they turn a blind eye to everything and say “f*ck it, who cares?” followed by laughs again. I personally don’t find it funny that law enforcement are joking about their jobs and saying that they don’t give a f*ck. That legitimately scares me. The video continues to get worse when one officer says “I wanted to report a robbery—you probably deserved it!” The other officer hears something and says “Was that a rape whistle, we got a girl over there” and the other responds with “Go ahead, call the cops. They can’t un-rape you” And they laugh….and laugh….

And then! The other cop responds with “You did turn the camera off, didn’t you?” OH MY STARS. I was stunned that law enforcement would joke about people calling them reporting robberies. But I am speechless that in the moment when these officers should be helping this girl, they are laughing about rape. That to me is inexcusable and these men should both be fired for their behavior. I am SO HAPPY that they were dumb enough to make these remarks in front of a camera.

Though the video was disturbing, the comments on the video were even more shocking to me. While some people were upset that those meant to protect were laughing and making jokes about rape instead of helping, the majority of people seemed okay with it. They said that it was “nothing different than what we do daily in our lives at work or play.” Cops are supposed to set an example and protect and serve the public. These officers are a complete joke and I cannot believe that anyone would think this behavior is acceptable.

We need the police to be on our side. Rape is not a joke. Robbery is not a joke. Wearing a police badge is a privilege and an honor. We as citizens can do nothing but hope that our law enforcement is going to come through for us when we need them. How can you feel comfortable coming to police about a rape or sexual assault, when even when faced with one in person they don’t take it seriously? We cannot condone behavior like this because we need to be able to trust that the police are there to help us, not hurt us. Please watch the video and share your thoughts!
