Quick Hit: Lorena Bobbitt Speaks Out Against Domestic Violence

My hometown of Manassas, Virginia has been in the news for a variety of crazy reasons throughout my lifetime but there is one incident that America will never forget. In 1993 Lorena Bobbitt attacked her husband John Wayne Bobbitt and in a moment of rage, cut his penis off and threw it into a field. Funny thing is I know exactly where the field is! Anyway long story short cops find the penis, sew it back on and John Bobbitt now does porn. The part of the story that isn’t exposed as often however, is that Lorena attacked John because he came home extremely drunk one night and raped her.

Now Lorena has healed, is married and has a beautiful daughter named Olivia.  She acknowledges that what she did was a crime but she explains that it was not done on purpose. She elaborates that,

“It’s sad because domestic violence put me and my ex-husband in the hospital.”

“I took my life back and I gave myself a second chance, it takes a lot of energy to say no, I’m not a victim, I want to go on with my life and you just don’t look back.”

Lorena goes by her maiden name now, but decided to use her well known Bobbitt last name when advocating for abused and battered women. Her charity, Lorena’s Red Wagon, helps raise money for shelters all over Prince William County in Virginia.

“I use that name, the Lorena Bobbitt name, to help others,” she said. “Something good has to come out of this tragedy like mine.”

This is great to me because I feel like for so long she has been a punch line to jokes or a line in a song (ex: Lil Wayne: “She crazy ’bout that d*ck, Lorena Bobbitt). I love that she is using her influence and famous last name to help other women! What do you guys think about this?
