*SPOILER ALERT*
Everyone who knows me is well aware of my obsession with all things Amy Poehler and especially Leslie Knope. So naturally I was thrilled when the season premier of Parks & Rec came on last night. My thrill was furthered by the amazingly feminist undertones of the show.
Not only is Leslie running for Pawnee City Council (support her campaign here), but she willingly (albeit with some serious hesitation) gave up her relationship with Ben rather than risk her career. But wait, it gets better. Not only was Ben completely supportive of Leslie’s decision, but he made the breakup mutual and amicable. Oh, and he made a button for her campaign! Here’s some video on hulu
In short, thank [insert religious/inspirational figure here] for this show, which shows (not once, but twice, remember Louis C.K.’s character) young women that putting your career ahead of your relationship isn’t the worst thing in the world, and that you can do so and be perfectly happy with your decision! Here’s hoping this will influence more tv writers to portray powerful, intelligent women in this light!
Oh, and that Weinergate spoof? Priceless.
