So, if you watched the GOP primary debate on Monday, you saw the Perry/Bachman brawl that went down over HPV. I’ll admit, I watched the recaps the next day and not the actual debate, in fear of having nightmares that night if I were to do so. However, many of us young woman have already gotten our three HPV shots…and for good reason.
I may have gotten it at 15,16? Right in the midst of the Anti-Vaccine Movement in California, where people with no factual evidence said to not vaccine your children because it will have negative side effects in the future. I remember receiving the shot and some of my naieve, biased girlfriends at the time, told me I’d have deformed babies if I were to get the shot. I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THEY HEARD THAT. I remember being angry with my father who asked/mandated me to get the shot, and told him I’ll have deformed babies and will die of some weird illness because of it. Where he then assured me he would never put me in harm AND that drugs, treatments, etc. are given and conducted in Europe for at least 10 years before the USA even looks at the new discovery.
Anyways, back to the debate. Pretty much Bachman is pissed because Perry mandated his citizens to have their female children recieve the HPV shots. Bachman says thats the government stepping too far into citizen’s personal lives, etc. etc. HOWEVER, I must say, Perry allowed parents to easily opt-out of this mandate if choose to.
BUT, I must give Perry a few slaps on the back because he has pulled out some quite liberal tactics it appears in Texas. To have females receive the shot will only help, well, our society as a whole. Bachman does not have all the information. She uses the words similar to “poor innocent girls who do not have sex are being forced to have a shot to stop an illness which is only contracted via sex.” Etc., etc. I can see Bachman’s view in that maybe this shot will give little girls, girls who never even knew about sex, to maybe prompt them to have sex. Like how DARE works. I don’t know the statistics of girls who begin having sex in Texas, but lets face the harsh realities. Many kids in general have sex beginning at a young age, so why not protect them?
Sorry this was a longer quick-hit, it actually really wasn’t a quick hit at all. And, I actually would write more on it because it’s important.
Anyways, here is a link to a Kaiser article on the Bachman/Perry HPV debate. AND
Bachman’s retaliation against Perry’s HPV tactics, to prove I wasn’t lying… (Only 5 minutes)

I think there is some amount of validity in the debate against vaccinations, though not at all for the reasons that Bachman cited in these debates.. It’s probably unwise to dismiss the biological perspective and rather focus on the fact that it’s a vaccine that is sexually stigmatized (as Bachman does). HPV vaccines may possibly protect you from one strain of virus, but new studies showing that it can be increasing your chances of cervical/ovarian cancers.
I believe the debate should not be focused on the rare cases of extremely bad reactions to the vaccine– if you research any medicine or vaccine, theses cases almost ALWAYS exist. But, it is probably wise to promote further research on cancerous cell mutation it could be causing.

I agree entirely, what a though-provoking comment. To vaccinate or not to vaccinate. I see from your comment, you must know much about the scientific side of vaccines, which I admit, I know more of the policy/political side. If it protects against one strain, but potentially causes an increase in others, then why bother with the vaccine, right? But, HPV is the most sexually transmitted disease and it is undetected in males. So, I cannot say that women should not get it based on newer studies. There are cases where women have contracted HPV, then receive the shots, and HPV has left their bodies.

I’d also agree that there have been many cases of helping the woman who has been inoculated with the vaccine, but that also begs the question of whether over-vaccinations help foster an environment for superbugs in which our medical system have no way of dealing with. I suppose its a question of potentialities– Just a thought 🙂
