“Think Before You Speak” the Advertising Council’s first LGBT awareness campaign is working to prevent the use of the phrase “that’s so gay.” The campaign has enlisted celebrity singer Hilary Duff and comedian Wanda Sykes to call teens out for using the phrase in two of the commercials. After each video, the campaign displays their slogan, “When you say ‘That’s so gay,’ do you realize what you say? Knock it off.” I know that it really gets on my nerves when I hear people use the phrase and I hope that these messages will help people to see how insensitive and ridiculous they sound when they use it.

I’m so happy to see word spreading about the importance of really thinking about the meaning of our words. It’s time to be more thoughtful about the messages we perpetuate in mindless phrases.
