Her Two Cents

When I was in the eighth grade, my mom and her friends started a mother/daughter book club.  So once a month from the time I was in eighth grade until I left for college, my friends and their moms got together to discuss a book over tasty food and coffee.  Adorable, right?

Right.  And I’ve really missed this kind of organization in the past four years of my college career.  Which is exactly why I was so elated to hear about JMU’s feminist bookclub “Her Two Cents”.  Her two cents is a book club organized by JMU Student Wellness and Outreach employees Courtney Boyd and Heather Driver, and the club met for the first time yesterday.

We met to discuss Anita Shreve’s novel The Pilot’s Wife, and ended up with a unique opportunity to talk literature in terms of-believe it or not-feminism!  Now, I don’t want to give anything away, but this particular book is chocked full of female characters ranging everywhere from “the other woman” to “the mother” and everything in between.  This provided great fodder for feminist dukes to come together and chat about the role of women in literature.

And we got to do it all while eating kettle corn.  Seriously.  Talk about a relaxed & welcoming environment!

So if any of this sounds appealing to you, we’d love to have you join us for the next meeting October 21st at 4pm in Warren 403.  We will be discussing our next book (Picture Perfect by Jodi Picault) at the following meeting on November 4th, so please come out!  We’ll save you some kettle corn.

  1. I love any excuse to talk about books and The Pilot’s Wife was a great first read. Everyone who showed up had interesting things to say, so I am definitely going to participate in the next book. I know that during this time of year taking on any new endeavor can be a challenge, but the book club seems like it is going to be a great way to meet people, read for pleasure, and mouth off about feminism!
