I Like It On The…

If you have a Facebook profile, you’ve probably noticed a lot of women have been posting pseudo-sexual status updates that usually start with “I like it on the [floor, kitchen table, couch, etc.]”. It actually applies to where your handbag is at the moment you’re updating, and is meant to…raise breast cancer awareness?

Wait, what? Is it just me, or is there a link missing here?

Breast cancer is an important issue that definitely deserves our attention, but I’m pretty positive this isn’t the best way to go about it. Especially if it excludes men from the equation, because breast cancer affects men too (both directly and, far more often, indirectly). And some women don’t even know what these statuses are about. In reality, you’re not raising awareness of shit other than where your purse is.

If you’re really interested in raising breast cancer awareness, go here. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is the only breast cancer related organization that the American Institute of Philanthropy gives an A+ for how they use their donations.

  1. Great job articulating the irony that many of us ignore because we don’t want to ruffle feathers over a seemingly innocent FB trend.

  2. Great post–thanks! It’s frustrating that so much “activism” on behalf of breast cancer awareness focuses on needs for diagnosis and a cure but never seems to push for a serious investigation of the (environmental?) causes of this disease.
