Want to Pick What You Learn? Become a Women’s Studies Minor!

JMU’s Women’s Studies Minor is a cross disciplinary introduction to theories and scholarship in Women’s Studies.  It examines the social construction of gender, how gender affects access to opportunity, and the experiences and contributions of women. It gives you information and skills to be an activist in your community depending on whatever it is you want to do.

I recently went to the exit meeting for women’s studies minors that are graduating seniors. They bought us pizza and asked for feedback about our experience with women’s studies. They wanted to know what we liked and what we didn’t and what should have changed and what could be added. They wanted to know how it changed us and how we felt as people after experiencing our classes in the minor. The professors that participate and teach in this minor care so much about their student’s education and reaching us, but more than that they care about our feelings and experience.

It was refreshing to have professors ask you about how their job has affected you and your life. Every year we do individual surveys for our teachers, but this way allowed us to further explain ourselves and provide useful ideas for the future students that will walk in the same footsteps we did. So if you want to be part of something more, have an interest in gender issues, want to help change the world, and be able to have your own voice in your education the women’s studies minor may be the one for you.
