Why Taylor Swift’s Instagram Endorsement for Kamala Harris might just guarantee a win for the democratic party.

It’s no surprise celebrities have a huge impact on their fans, especially pop star, Taylor Swift; but can they sway an election? What’s the point of celebrities sharing their political views? We all know they live fabulous lives, the top 1% of America, so why should we listen to them?

Taylor Swift first announced her political stance in 2018, when she made an instagram post endorsing Jim Cooper and Phil Bredensen for the midterm elections in Tennessee. In Taylor Swift’s 2020 Netflix Documentary “Miss Americana” she revealed her values and decision to publicly announce her political views to the world. In Miss Americana, Swift was very open about her opinions, getting emotional at times, “I need to be on the right side of history”. Since then, Taylor Swift endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 election against Donald Trump.

More recently, fans have speculated whether Swift would endorse Harris in the 2024 election. We all know Swift’s political views, but fans also recognize her long time relationship with the Kennedy family, and new friendship with the Mahomes. Taylor swift dated Connor Kennedy in 2012 and has a great relationship with their family today. On August 23, Robert F Kennedy Jr. suspended his campaign in the 2024 election and endorsed Donald Trump. Fans speculate if this would cause her to not speak out against Donald Trump. Taylor has also been hanging out with Britney and Patrick Mahomes, close friends to her current boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and open Trump supporters. However, we know in the past, Swift hasn’t cared about who she upsets when it comes to politics, in her documentary, Miss Americana, Swift argues “If I get bad press for saying don’t put a homophobic racist in office, then I get bad press for that. I really don’t care.” Despite these friendships, Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz via an instagram post a week ago. Swift made this post right after the presidential debate on September 10th. In Swift’s post, she addressed a fake AI version of herself circling the internet endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run. She combated this rumor by writing “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election.” calling Kamala Harris a “steady-handed, gifted leader”, Swift stands by Kamala and all she represents. Swift’s post didn’t tell people who to vote for, rather she encouraged people to do their own research and make their own choice. Swift signed her post “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady” poking fun at JD Vance, Donald Trump’s Vice President elect’s criticism of democrat women. In a 2021 interview with Fox News, JD Vance complained that the country was being run by democrats, “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.”.

While many people love Taylor Swift’s music, how much influence does she really have over politics? Well, after just 24 hours of her instagram post being up, the post gained over 10 million likes and 400,000 new voter registrations. These kinds of numbers are larger than anything either candidate has gained by promoting their own Presidential Run. There’s even been a 400%-500% increase in voter registration.  So it’s safe to say The Swift Effect is in full force. And maybe Swift does not live like the rest of us, with private jets and multi million dollar penthouses, but she’s a woman, and this election impacts every single woman whether you recognize it or not.

Swift’s done her research, now you do yours. Register to vote. https://vote.gov
